EFFECT OF A GOOD LEADERSHIP STYLE IN AN ORGANISATION.

EFFECT OF A GOOD LEADERSHIP
STYLE IN AN ORGANISATION.

The all-round development and achievement of the preset goals of an organisation hinges on so many factors ranging from team work, effective and competent workforce leadership style, creativity and innovation of the organisation.

The leadership style being operated in an organisation is the bedrock of the good conduct in such an organisation. The approach and manner of leading, directing, supervising and management of an organisation is key to its growth and development.

Let's take for instance an organisation where the autocratic leadership style is being used. The workers in such an organisation key only to what the Managing Director or the CEO wants. This somehow kills their creativity and possible innovations that could be a source of advancement for the organisation. The workers would be so focused on what the 'boss' wants and would be neglecting what does the organisation as a whole needs.

Another example is the authoritative leadership style. Here, the CEO oversees the general affairs of the organisation but gives room for opinions and suggestions that could move the organisation forward. There is freedom of speech in the sense of workers being able to air their opinions, get recognised for their creativity and/or innovation and commitment to tasks and duties. In this style of leadership, opinions and ideas of every member of the organisation is tabled and discussed by everyone and the ones deemed to be more realistic and sacrosanct to the organisation are adopted. There is general consensus of decisions to be made and whenever lines of action don't go as planned, fingers are not usually pointed because these decisions were made agreed upon by everyone in the organisation.

In the authoritative leadership style, there is a good flow of ideas moving round the organisation. Everyone is a key factor in making decisions. Meetings where decisions are made are not only limited to the Head of Departments alone but also the subordinates, interns and every other official worker in such organisation. There is freedom of information in an organisation where the authoritative leadership style is being utilised.

Moving forward, another leadership style is the laissez-faire type of leadership. Here, the CEO leaves most decisions to the Head of Units and Departments and only oversees ones he or she thinks fits his or her status quo as the Chief Executive Officer of the organisation. This would bring about a state of disarray because leaving too many decisions to departmental heads could cause confusion between them. Every Head of Department would want to make sure that his or her own opinion gets enough credence irrespective of how relevant it is to the task at hand or how it aligns with the vision of the organisation.

It is quite good for the CEO of an organisation to leave certain decisions to his employees but this should be minimal as the organisation as implied is a collection of people who come together to make meaningful decisions about things. Roles and duties should be given to each and every member of staff. Adopting a laissez-faire approach to leadership most times brings about enimity and envy among departmental heads. Especially when decisions made don't favour some particular group of people in such organisation.

As a matter of way forward, the authoritative leadership style is seen as the best leadership style that an organisation can work with. The following are reasons for this submission :

1). Every member of staff feels part of the organisation and gives their full support to tasks, activities and programmes

2). The CEO or Managing Director is closer to the members of staff who can easily spot abnormalities or other forms of vices in the organisation. This would make it easy to detect wrongdoings and help in having firsthand information on activities of every department of such organisation.

3). Decision making process is done by every member of the organisation and this brings about collective success and responsibility in case things don't go as planned.

4). Authoritative leadership style gives room for creativity and innovation on the part of the employees. They would be always ready to air their views, opinions and suggestions that would bring positive changes to the organisation.

5). There would be a general enabling environment for everyone to thrive in their respective roles and duties as everyone is important to the organisation.

Having laid out these few reasons, the authoritative leadership style looks like the perfect approach to managing any organisation.
