Re: Compliments and Criticism

Re: Compliments and Criticisms

A while ago I wrote an article about compliments and criticism. I tried to highlight the pros and cons of these two important phenomenon and how we could get our ways around it. After going through the article several times and digesting the content and comments that followed suit, I came across a couple of conclusions.

First, not everyone wants to be criticised. Some people are perfectionists and they believe that whatever they do is the best and as such never pay attention to views, opinions or suggestions of others. This is quite erroneous because no one is an island of knowledge. You could think you've created the best masterpiece but someone who might not be so vast in your field could still easily point out areas that you could work on. This is what education actually means; being ready to learn, unlearn and re-learn. This is very possible only if you give thoughts and considerations to people's criticism (opinions, views, point of views) about you, your work or actions.

Secondly, we oftentimes want to receive compliments only for our actions and activities. No one really likes to hear that somehow negative opinion or remark. But these things are very essential. Humans naturally love to be praised and the ability to listen to criticism of something you've done might be quite hard for anyone. Nevertheless, it is very sacrosanct that we have the same mindsets to both compliments and criticisms; they're both tools for development. A lot of people in history failed and got back up not because they were complimented for their failures. But because they were criticised for the things they weren't getting right. Some of these people went back with contents of their failed attempts and the criticisms to create the best versions of what they had previously failed at. A good example is that of the man who created the light bulb. He failed a lot of times. He failed so much that if he were just an average person, he'd have stopped trying again and might have never achieved his dream. Criticisms are meant to spur us into action, more actions really. If you want to be the best of who you can be, then be ready to listen to the worst of criticisms.

Lastly, it is normal to try again after a failed attempt. A lot of people lose hope in doing things because they failed at previous attempts and also got criticised for it. Other people use failure and criticism has springboards or levers to propel into their greatest mindsets and achieve great success. It is not science fiction. It involves hardwork, perseverance, patience, commitment and prayer. Losing confidence because of criticism is one of the worst injustice one could ever do to him or herself.

Whether you're the best or the worst, you'll always get criticised along with the compliments you get so why don't you internalise these two (compliments and criticisms) the same way and use them as guides towards achieving your desired success?

I'm Quadri AbdulQudus Bolaji and I believe in 'trying again' regardless of how many times you fail. Thank you and God bless you ✌️

  1. This is indeed a fantastic write-up from your sir, it is quite obvious that no one is free from criticism and that anyone who fears or try to avoid criticism, my not have done something or will even end up doing nothing. Furthermore, compliments are source of motivations for individual as they bring sense of satisfaction on a particular activity. Though, compliments are positive, it might be a fake one sometimes as some people likes to flatter other.

  2. This is quite very true.
An artist once said ''If nobody talks about you, then you're nobody''
Muslims believe that we will all be tested in every way possible to test our faith.
Even Christians know from Adam ban, we will all be tested with pain, sadness and happiness in our lives

  3. Having said it perfectly well, I would like to draw the final curtain on your beautiful piece that Compliment and Criticism are the two tools that man can use time- in- time- out to transcend to the greatest in life.

  4. I love the facts that have been portrayed by the writer in the essay. Sometimes, compliments are somewhat misleading while criticisms can be regarded as the bitter truth...Job well done sir
