TAKE OUR YOUTHS OFF THE STREET

Help them! Save them! Rehabilitate them! Change them! Revive them and their dreams! Take our youths off the street! Take them off the streets where they engage in various atrocities and crimes. Help make them better individuals and responsible prospective adults who will build the nation and make it glorious. There are thousands of young and active minds on our Nigerian streets wandering about or getting involved in serious evil acts that are appalling to the eyes and painful to the heart. There are wonderful and intelligent young beings out there on our Nigerian streets that are being used as casual workers, child soldiers, sex workers, labourers, slaves and suicide bombers on a daily basis. There are several millions of children who are homeless, hungry, cold, sick and helpless on our Nigerian streets. These children grow up to become desperate, wicked, cruel, callous, heartless, vicious, rabid, irresponsible and inconsiderate youths. They end up choosing crime, violence, alcoh...

RESPECT FOR OTHERS

The issue of respect in our communities is a topic that is well discussed among youths and adults alike. Respect as it is known is an attitude of consideration and high regard. It is expected of everyone to respect every individual on his or her community ;children, youths and adults. Respect and disrespect ;the opposite form of respect are phenomena that can be well related to in our communities. Oftentimes, you hear of youths who are disrespectful to the elderly ones or sometimes their peers. Taking a critical look at the the subject, we will see that no one is ought to be disrespected due to the fact that we are all humans and equal regard should be given to all. In our communities of today, we hear of adults who are of the habit of intimidating, disrespecting and disregarding younger ones who they believe are below them and as such, they are meant to be trampled upon. This is a very wrong ideology because every human has the right to be respected for the sole reason of Nobility...

FUNCTIONAL EDUCATION : A TOOL FOR ADVANCEMENT

Education as we all know is a process or the cumulative processes of imparting knowledge, skills and judgement. It can also be said to be the facts, skills and ideas that have been learned either formally or informally. According to Arop Joseph (17 - 06 - 2016), "Education is the slight hammer that breaks the yoke of ignorance and moulds knowledge, skills, ideas good moral values in a person be it a child, a youth or full grown adult. No matter a person's age, learning never stops." Going by the aforementioned meanings and definitions of Education, we can deduce that it is 'a process of inclination from the stage of ignorance to the stage of knowledge and intellectual capability in an individual or a group of people. Education is a veritable tool needed in our families, societies, communities and countries alike for the upward progression of these social institutions and the society. "Good education is essential for a well run society." Without education,...

PEACEFUL COEXISTENCE

Oftentimes, we have to relate with people of different cultures, backgrounds, ideologies and mindset. It is imperative that every person has a form of relationship with another person or others for survival in the world. This is done through several means in different places. One of these is Peaceful Coexistence. In our daily affairs, we need to interact with people and these interactions are very essential to our businesses, work groups, families, communal survival and life in general. Interaction and relationships with family, friends, colleagues or acquaintances are always good and profitable if there is Peaceful Coexistence among the parties involved. Peaceful Coexistence is an integral part of our daily activities that can't be compromised. It is very essential in the family, schools, companies, among friends and in the society. Nothing can be used in place of this particular phenomenon because without peaceful coexistence amongst people, there is tendency of havin...

LOVE; REALITY OR FICTION?

What is love? Who is to be loved? Is love real or fictional? What happens if this so-called love fades? This phenomenon of love is something most people look for but never get. Have you ever being loved? What type of love was expressed to you? Mutual? Agape? Paternal / Maternal? While some of us believe love is real and it is a very good feeling, most people think nothing like love exists because this life is full of hatred and wickedness. For someone who has felt love before, it is very easy to support the fact that love is the best feeling one can ever feel. Love is life! Without love, the world would be a place of commotion and chaos. But on a closer view of some people’s life, you just have to understand their perspectives that love is fictional because they’ve never being loved and the few times they’ve tried to love people, they were later heartbroken. Now, how do you expect someone like that to believe that love exists? Realistically speaking, love exists and it is a very ...

THIS LIFE; CRUEL OR GOOD?

Life they say isn’t an arena where everything is rosy.... Nobody would ever promise a smooth journey because it is fictional but a safe journey is what the totality of life’s inhabitants pray for. One cannot always get it right, there are days were you just feel that things are not going as planned. There would be that moment you just want to run away from the problems, trials, worries and tribulations life points in your direction. It does not mean that you are the person with the worst fate, it just symbolises the cruel reality of life of good and bad happenings in every individual’s life. You can also have the wonderful moments you just don’t want the good atmosphere to come to an end; you meet all objectives and goals, your purpose comes into perspective and you feel so good to be a living being. But the reality is that even the rich and wealthy do cry and go through trying times. People like to believe that as long as you are financially stable, you shouldn’t or won’t have any o...

SPIRITUALITY AND CREATIVITY

Religious activities are believed by a vast majority of people all over the world to be elements of one's spiritual devotedness to God but I personally think that that is not all you have to do to be ' spiritual'. Spirituality is the totality of your acts of worship, good intentions towards others, the reading and following of either the Scripture or the Holy Qur'an,following certain religious doctrines that have been preached and most importantly your faith in God, His Angels and the belief in the Hereafter (Judgment Day). All of these and so many other things form the basis of your spiritual personality but most of us make a big mistake by adhering strictly to these spiritual elements and doctrines without allowing our inner self to perform its function - to be creative to the maximum. Religion doesn't stop anyone from being creative and productive in their various fields as long as things are done the right way. The Italian clergyman and poet , Francesco Pe...

THE BOY OF MANY DREAMS

The bright and young mind who likes to get things done. The special kid that has a knack for assembling and dissembling parts. The lovely creature that loves to put on the stethoscope ; amazing boy. This kid loves to help people get through their work just the same way a psychiatrist does. He wants to fly the biggest of jets and aircrafts. He always wished he jumped on the biggest musical stage just to dish out wonderful and melodious tunes to millions of people. This special boy loves to dream big. The amazing little kid who wanted to emulate Papilo, Jay Jay and Thierry Henry. He always wanted to dribble past 3 defenders with just one super move. He fancied the man working on sites in the Far East, loved people who developed the model for skyscrapers and penthouses. This sweet little boy wanted to be the Malcolm X of Nigeria, he also wished he could one say ' I have a dream ' like Martin Luther King Jr said. He admired Nelson Mandela's perseverance and wanted to one day ...

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO LEARN?

Have you ever asked yourself that question? Has it ever occurred to you that you need to learn something? We shouldn't always be told what to do at particular stages of our lives. The most annoying thing about learning is the common act of parents choosing for their children what course to study in tertiary institution. Children should be asked by their parents what their aspirations and likes are, they need to be listened to when it comes to making decisions about their futures. A lot of youths are in various universities, polytechnics, colleges and schools studying courses they don't have passion for and as a result are not performing as expected by their parents. This is because most of them want to study another discipline entirely but with the pressure of parents / guardians who want them to study that Medicine, Law or Engineering, they end up performing below expectations. You might want to say that the parents know what is best for their children, well that might be ...

WRONG CUES

Oftentimes, we find youths of puberty age in our community getting hooked up and they call it dating/courting. Most of these couples don't start their relationship life the usual way which is a boy approaching a girl to tell her he ' loves / likes ' her.... Some of these relationships start when either of the boy or girl thinks he or she is getting some cues from the opposite sex though it might be right or wrong. Cues are actions or events that signals somebody to do something and when conceptualizing it to the subject of dating /courtship, we can say that cues are the actions that opposite sexes give themselves telling one another to make a move towards the other. These cues are initiators of actions that tells the other person what to do or gives the other person hints on what to do in friendship /relationship situations. Cues being initiators of actions can either be understood rightly or wrongly depending on the individuals involved. One might think the opp...

YOUR QUOTA TO HUMANITY

What have you done to improve the welfare of people living around you? What have you done to help out the individuals that have come to you for one help or the other? Have you helped people out of Generosity and not for the intention of getting back a favour in return? Every member of the society has to do something for the upward progression of the community he or she lives in. No matter how small or little the favour or help might be, we all have to do something to help others as long as we have the capability to do so. How many young children have you touched their lives positively? How many elderly ones have you helped in doing one thing or the other? How many street kids have you tried to impact their lives positively by engaging them in various activities that can be of help to them as well as be an asset for them to use continually? A #50 naira note given to a young hungry and tattered-looking boy might be very useful for the boy some minutes at least. Engaging the joble...
